Feel Our Freedom

Stories in the media about  developmental disabilities  often focus on problems, and overshadow the accomplishments of many people.  The topics of insufficient funding, neglect and abuse tend to dominate headlines.  In 1999, High Tide Press set out to tell a few of the many, many success stories of people in Illinois who have disabilities.  The result is the book Feel Our Freedom: Connections fro people with Developmental Disabilities.  It was released in 2002.

In Feel Our Freedom, photographer Jon Lowenstein captures the poignant and inspiring moments, and the everyday rhythm in the lives of 40 adults with disabilities. Through interviews with writer Alisa Hauser Kraft, these men and women share their stories and their feelings. Each page demonstrates how new meaning has been brought to the homes, workplaces, and communities of each of these persons.

All of the agencies who provide services to the persons featured in Feel Our Freedom have structured their programs around the persons they serve and support. They encourage individual to pursue his or her own goals while living as independently as possible.

High Tide Press , a subsidiary of Trinity Foundation, was  founded with the mission of providing accessible, useful publications to people working in human service fields.  They continue to provide publications concerning disabilities, psychology, leadership, and management.
