Doctoral Psychology Internship: Trinity’s doctoral internship program is a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) and is accredited on contingency by the American Psychological Association (APA). As part of their training experience, interns spend five days per week within an outpatient mental health clinic setting. During the year, the intern achieves competence applying empirically based treatments. Interns also gain proficiency administering psychological tests and generating written reports.  

The clinic serves persons with a range of presenting concerns. Autism screening and assessment is also a service provided at the clinic, and interns receive training in this type of assessment. The opportunity to gain experience treating persons diagnosed with concurrent developmental disability and mental health concerns is available. Interns receive a total of four hours of regularly scheduled supervision per week, and participate in weekly didactic trainings. There is an emphasis on training in third-wave contextual behavior therapy models, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. The opportunity to co-facilitate case consultation for therapy externs is also provided.

Students are required to be on site 40 hours per week on site. Residential Internship: Help people flourish in their home! This internship is for bachelor's and master's students in social work, psychology, and other related fields and involves work with adults living in group home environments. Teach life skills like cooking and budgeting, provide case management, engage persons served in hobbies and leisure activities, and provide skills coaching. Internships are available serving persons with intellectual disabilities, serious mental illness, or persons with both intellectual disabilities and mental illness. The intern also participates in weekly trainings on topics including ethics, psychotherapy, behavioral analysis, advocacy, and case management. Flexible shifts are available, including evenings and weekends. The intern is asked to work three days per week for a minimum of 15 hours per week. A semester commitment is required, and there are opportunities for year-long internships. Sites are available throughout Illinois. Apply now, and see how close we are to you! 

Psychosocial Rehabilitation Therapy Externship: This experience involves work with adult clients participating in a day treatment program. Master’s and doctoral students in psychology and social work may apply. Students learn empirically based treatments while providing individual, group and milieu therapy to persons with mental illness and/or persons with serious mental illness and mild intellectual disabilities. The student’s training goals dictate the population emphasized during the externship experience. Weekly didactic trainings covering Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Functional Analytic Therapy are provided. The training year begins July 1 and ends June 30. The extern is asked to work three days per week from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Fridays are mandatory, and externs choose the other two days, Monday-Thursday.

Outpatient Therapy Externship: This externship is for master’s and doctoral students in psychology and social work. The site offers experience working within an outpatient clinic serving children, adolescents and adults with individual and family modalities. Training in empirically based treatment models (Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Functional Analytic Therapy) is emphasized as part of the experience. The extern completes their training at one of three outpatient mental health centers located in New Lenox, Joliet and Homewood. The extern maintains an individual therapy caseload, and is responsible for completing initial assessments, treatment plans, and treatment plan reviews. This experience affords the extern the opportunity to work with persons with a variety of presenting problems, including anxiety disorders, major depression, bipolar, trauma, obsessive compulsive disorder, anger management, and social skills deficits. A year-long commitment is required. Fridays are mandatory.
