At its 7th annual Nonprofit Symposium on
Wednesday, May 17, at North Park
University, The Axelson
Center for Nonprofit Management awarded its prestigious Alford-Axelson Award
for Nonprofit Managerial Excellence to Trinity Services, Inc. The award also included a $5,000 grant from
the University.
Established in 2002, the Alford-Axelson Award for Nonprofit
Managerial Excellence is given annually to organizations that exemplify
extraordinary managerial excellence. The
award is named in honor of leading nonprofit thinker, Jimmie R. Alford and
devoted community healthcare leader, Nils G. Axelson. Two awards are given – one in the small
nonprofit category, the other in the large nonprofit category. Trinity was the winner of the large nonprofit
category.
In choosing this year’s winners, a panel of evaluators
consisting of Chicago’s
top nonprofit and philanthropy leaders reviewed a nominated pool of 40
organizations. Nominees underwent a
rigorous review process, which included an examination the of the
organizations’ audits and financial records, performance indicators, primary
objectives, and the social needs addressed by their missions.
After receiving the award, Trinity’s executive director, Art
Dykstra noted, “Miguel de Cervantes made the observation some 500 years ago
that the journey is better than the inn.
Being selected as the recipient of the 2006 Alford-Axelson Award for
Nonprofit Managerial Excellence provided important feedback to Trinity’s Board
of Directors and Executive Leadership staff that the journey taken is a proper
one and that in the eyes of good and knowledgeable people, Trinity Services,
Inc. continues towards true north in its mission and operations.”
